If there is such a thing as procrastination minions, I would be
one of them.”
~ Me, 2014

But let's see... that was me, last year. Erm, technically, yesterday. Ha!

With the start of the new year, on top of the usual hullabaloo, there are several things that also launched. First, I'm back at Uni, and the first day of classes for this sem will start in 2 days. (Yay!) Second, I have started a personal advocacy, Philippine Fundraisers and Benefit Shows. And of course, this comes with the birth of another blog and facebook page. This group's aim is to help out organizers (who are not backed by corporate vampires), independent artists, and other non-profits in promoting their cause-oriented events. This could mean that I may skip organizing Benefit Shows myself, as I divert my attention and energies to that. But, I won't be shutting my doors to anyone who asks for help, of course. It will all depend on the timeliness, co-organizers and beneficiary.

For that, I am still thinking if I would also put up twitter and instagram accounts for Philippine Fundraisers, as these would be quite time-consuming if I would maintain it all alone... Any volunteers?!? Please, PLEASE let me know! I am looking for blog contributors and bloggers too, you know!!

Another thing planned for this year, is the comeback of a low-profit indie distro, (name withheld for several reasons ~ lol) as I have been receiving countless requests, pre-orders and inquiries. You're pressuring me, guys! Haha! I know, I know... I too, have several CDs still piled up, and awaiting shipment.

Hmm.. what else?

Ahh, yep! I do need to update this blog template as my previous image host changed urls again! Note to those who think you can host and hyperlink through facebook, think again. And that includes me.

Well, before I forget, I quit pursuing several duties too. It's a way to balance things. I look at it as a little pat on the back to myself, for finally learning to say NO to profiteers who demand too much time and pay unreasonably small. I basically don't care how much I earn, as I am not after the profit, especially if it is fun to do. But once the fun is gone, I am too.

I also scratched off my list putting up a certain service company, complete with tax and BIR and all that chaos of paper trails. Taking into consideration an observation of a friend that I tend to dive head-on whenever I think I have a brilliant idea, without checking on its feasibility. Yep, thanks for saving me a headbang on another huge wall of stone.

And because my list got shorter, and I am an ADHD that way, I decided to start one of the challenges on my bucket list! A 365-Day Photo Challenge! OOH YEAH!! *play stadium full of people cheering sound*

Thanks to the new toy that I received last Christmas from such a wonderfully sweet, talented, and dear person, I now have a reason to finally install photoshop! Hahaha... Yep, there is still a part of me living in the stoneage.

Let's just hope that I can stand up to this and complete it. Although, I really feel positive with this. I can do this! I may have failed the 100-days-100-songs music challenge, because my Lolitap died on me, and a back-up netbook decided to follow Lolitap's footsteps... I am as positive as the near-fact that I am getting a new laptop. shipped. anytime. soon.

So, to end the past year and start anew, and to end my blabbering (lol), here's my first entry for Pictures of You: A 365-Day Photo Challenge...
Over the years, I have collected a number of Dover Thrift Editions, Unabridged books. Everytime I go to a bookstore, be it a second-hand shop or a big commercial one, I never forget to stroll by the classic literature section and hunt for these gems. When I first noticed these on the shelves years back, they were overflowing with brand new copies and titles, some even come in boxsets. But of course, I cannot buy them all! So, I made sure I get a copy or two, whenever I had extra cash.

Despite the bad reviews by some picky collectors like this one who replied on a forum at yahoo about the difference of an unabridged vs. abridged:

“”Dover Thrift editions are cheaper (as in, the paper is low quality and the binding isn't always that great) and uglier. They usually don't have as much supplemental material, like detailed explanatory notes or introductions and critical essays by great scholars.

I still consider these books as gems, firstly because they are unabridged. By just basing on its definition, it has not been reduced in size by omission, not shortened by leaving out some parts, not condensed and containing the original content. Although indeed, because of the low cost, it sacrifices most of the supplemental material.

Secondly, they are not ugly. I’ve been looking all over the net for what kind or gsm of paper they used, or whether they use recycled paper or not, unfortunately, I found nothing. In Dover's wiki page it states that they used to be keen on the quality, but the current ones are "not manufactured to this exemplary standard anymore due to cost-cutting economic measures". Not clear though when it started, but it is indeed called “thrift” for a reason. And since I acquired my books in different occasions in the course of several years, when arranging them next to each other on the shelf, you will clearly notice the different shades of the aging paper. As I said, they are not ugly, instead I find the fading color beautiful in its own way. The rustic, antique feel to it and the scent of aged paper are all reminiscent of the times when I used to treat my old school library as a temporary shelter of peace and escape inside the busy campus.

Lastly, they are inevitably now becoming rare. Count a few more years and they will in the long run be really hard to find, as all books may eventually die a slow death as the digital era comes to a peak and less and less trees remain. I may be wrong, but I am speaking in regards with copies from this south eastern part of the world.

I noticed that as the years pass, these books slowly dissipate. As their numbers deplete, sometimes, you would even chance upon books with tons of writings on them at second hand shops, with only one copy left. Then the dilemma strikes you, whether to buy it or not. It’s either the previous owner used it for a book report and jotted down notes unto them for lack of other source of writing material (or laziness to find/use one); or, it’s as if the one who analyzed the poetic lines with circles, underlines, question marks, synonyms and gibberish phrases, with barely legible handwriting, then ‘cleverly’ writes on the first page as a subtitle “Complete and Comprehensive” thought they were giving the next reader a favor. Duh? Can’t these people realize that writing on books meant for reading ONLY is like adding another line, color or shape on a painting done by someone else? It’s like writing on a wall of a museum “I was here” to add their mark. It’s not only vandalism, it’s sacrilege!

Oh wait, this post is not supposed to end with rants though. Before I get too carried away, click below for the list. I will be updating this list as I acquire new books. This will serve as my mini inventory, although I wish I had the time to document all my books! Can someone please already invent an app to compile the info of books by desired order (author, publication, genre, et.al.), by just taking a photo? Haha!

Big thanks to the live stream provided by the Coca-Cola Space Science Center/Columbus State University at Cape York, Australia, the whole world was able to watch this cosmic event even in places that are not in the path of the eclipse.
Here are some enhanced screenshots I took during this celestial moment. The inset is a video shot using a regular camera. (Please click each photo to see a larger view)
Honestly, I tend to get allergic whenever I open this link.. I guess it's because of the roller-coaster ride of 2012, and how it turned out to be one of those major turning points in my life.

From not traveling, to break-ups, old flames, new friendships, and discovering who your real friends are, I consider the past year as another closed chapter. Or better yet, a closed book! This year will be another novel. And as Brad Prailey wrote..

“
Tomorrow, is the first blank page of a 365 page book.
Write a good one.”

~ Brad Prailey

So, instead of scratching the allergies when visiting here, I'll create a cure that will absorb those memories and change them into lessons... either learned, unlearned, or still in the process of being learned. And instead of totally abandoning this blog due to the emotions it stirs, I'll make a total revamp! A change of name and skin would just be the start..

Now, let me grab that blank book and that not-so-high-tech digital camera of mine (that still needs several rubber bands to make sure the batteries won't pop out ~ lol), and bring it with me wherever I go. For each day that passes, is another page waiting to be captured.. in words, or a sketch, or a photograph.

It’s been a while since I posted anything here. Some photos are still in queue for upload, while some of them are stuck inside my dead laptop. But that is not the reason why I feel the urge to have a total (blog) make-over.

Originally, this blog is to document my travels within the Philippines and Europe. But I guess, I'm skipping the latter for a while, an indefinite while. Despite my resentment with this circumstance, I am left with no choice but to drop everything that has to do with going back to my fave foreign city in the world, Amsterdam.

Some people say that when you close a chapter in your life, you need to make a fresh start and begin to write the next chapter as soon as possible. But sometimes, our experiences are not just several chapters in one book, but several books even! I believe life consists of multiple snippets, short stories, novels, poetry and even silent soundtracks that only the mind can hear.

So without directly saying the reason behind this big change and to avoid putting it in black and white for the public (and the whole world) to see... let me just say that I am thankful for whatever happened in my past. I do not have regrets. The decisions we made are not inside tape decks that we can just place in rewind, fast forward or record over. Our past is indeed a significant factor in shaping who and where we are today.

Where we are heading though, is a totally different story. And it will just unravel in front of our eyes as we move along. So the key here is indeed, to get up, stand tall and move on.

follow the lyrics here

Now, when will I make the big change? Soon maybe. Let's see in the next few days or weeks.

Two of my friends, a colleague at work and a batchmate in High School needs our help.

A fire hit a residential area in Teachers Village, (San Vicente) in Quezon City (Philippines) last Thursday (May 17th), leaving at least 128 families homeless. Here are some news links: ABS-CBN and INQUIRER

My colleague, Kandy, is among those devastated by this tragedy. She and her family lost everything in the fire, saving only the clothes they are wearing that time... and to add to that, she also lost two of her close relatives.

The same thing happened to my my former classmate, Charry. Their house burned down completely and nothing was saved aside from the clothes on their backs.

The area is actually close to where I used to study and I used to go there all the time back in the day. I even have cousins living nearby. This is a very sad time.. especially for those who lived there that are now forced to start everything from scratch.

So we are knocking on to your generous hearts. Any kind of donation will be very helpful. In kind or in cash. Even your $1 will go a long way if alot of people will pitch in. We have set up a paypal donation link for them. Here's the link where you can send your donations:

All donations will be split into two, for the families of Kandy and Charry. Please help us spread the word so they can get as many help as possible.

For those living nearby, in Manila, or who can travel to Quezon City and wish to donate in kind, they are in need of clothes and other basic needs. If you need directions or if you want them to be picked up, please feel free to contact me here. (Please indicate your mobile number and/or email address in the contact form) I will reply to you as soon as possible.

Thank you...

And to those who already donated, a big warm thanks! We will surely mention your names to them (unless of course you donated anonymously). Here's the progress of our donations so far.. Due to urgency, we have first set a goal of at least $500 USD each but of course it would be way better if they receive more.

Coastlines

wading my feet thru water
buried a second in wet land
i looked down and saw -
we are but grains of sand
washed among a desert of waves
the heat burning and melting
each salty vignette.

the monotonous journey
of every new day
ends up in a beauty
cast down the unawake
vessels of the clouds
sail to the northwind's dictate
tossing down shadows
and colors with no name

one day a reflection shimmered
to the corner of my eye
it was you in a disguise
of a feeble light

we swim in a galaxy of endless passersby
and every turn of the wave
you flung closer by
the indulgent sun is out again
re-voyaging the plumblessness of the sky

i see you looking up in pain
i see you in the infinite pattern
each star you reflected
each star sweeps thru your breath
and like wind blowing through my face
your shadow kiss my tears away

we are confined to the ideas of mankind
by the border of conventional laws we bind
what is really in me,
what is really in you?
im all here waiting for the waves to continue

before the last wave will fade
before the last turn disintegrate
only two pairs of eyes left hovered
would these pairs find each other?

and i drown myself in wonder
coz we are but a grain of sand
in the coastline of the world.
Here's a little something I made for a friend of mine. She went to Coron, Palawan (Philippines) with her family last week. She took lots of photos, and here's one of them that I tweaked a little to show more color. I hope it's okay. And since there's no watermark, I'll just place a link to her fb account below, to give credit to her.

And as St. Augustine puts it..
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
~ I'm glad my friend decided to take on a new chapter.
Here's another amazing photo by my colleague Bernard. 20 minutes after
I pinned his other photo, Beach Walk, it was already repined by 3 people!
I hope this convinces him to join Pinterest too.. ;)

She wow'd the crowd for her incredible cuteness and wit, but most especially when she brought out her pet Boa Constrictor named Lucy. Naming your pet snake "Lucy" is already a bold gesture in itself. But wait til you hear what Olivia has to say...

This is a copy of her poem, with wikipedia links to the animals that she mentioned:

"Endangered Animals"

Come on don't you have a heart?
You don't want these animals to depart?
Forget the x factor and the top ten singing chart,
Look at the endangered animals and the poison dart.
The arnour* leopard, the Siberian tiger and polar bear,
They are so gorgeous, it is just not fair!
If I say their Latin name, will you listen more?
Oh Louis** please do not say this is a bore.

Varanus komodenis***, komodo dragon by the way.
Why does man have to take them all away?
Man you are such a fool.
Snakes killed alive for handbags that is just not cool.
Please listen to my passion, although it may not be in fashion.
I can not sing it, you might laugh,
I can not dance, you would say I was daft.
But I am seven
And I want these animals to last!!

notes:
I'm keeping the typos on her poem, as her sister Chloe confirms that Olivia wrote the poem herself.

*When searched over the net, there is no such thing as "arnour" leopard. It may have meant the Amur Leopard, which is primarily found in southwestern Russia and classified as Critically Endangered since 1996.

**Louis ~ is Louis Walsh, the guest judge of Britain's Got Talent when Olivia performed.

***Varanus komodenis ~ is the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis)

Another youtube link already gained over 4 million hits, but embedding is disabled so I used someone's upload that did allow embedding.

Check out her other poem, "Going, going gone...." and LIKE her page on facebook

Happy Earth day everyone! I hope this may inspire us all to take a second look on what our environment has come to, and think twice before doing anything that may endanger our planet even more...
